South Africa’s double World Cup winner Lukhanyo Am believes the time was right for him to return to Japan as he aims to force his way back into Rassie Erasmus’ plans next year.
Am, 32, had a brief spell with Kobe Steelers in the augural season in 2022, scoring three tries in six appearances.
The vastly-experienced centre, who can also play on the wing, has fallen down the Springboks’ pecking order this year with a youth movement leading to exciting talents such as Canan Moodie, 23, and Ethan Hooker, 22, shining in the green and gold jersey.
Erasmus said last week that Japan’s League One competition is ideal for established players and, with the formers blessing, 42-cap Springbok Am revealed that he could not turn down the opportunity to return to the competition during his public unveiling on Monday.

“When I received the offer this time, I spoke to Kurt-Lee (Arendse) and thought it was a good opportunity for me to contribute to the team, so taking everything into consideration, I decided that it was the right time," said Am who has on standby for South Africa's Autumn tour.
The 2019 and 2023 World Cup winner is ready to make his League One return in Saturday’s opening round game against Urayasu D-Rocks having joined his new club in November and featured in the club’s final pre-season training block as well as their last warm-up game against Shizuoka Blue Revs.
"I'm happy to have spent the past two weeks with the team in pre-season and to be preparing for the start of the season. I would like to share my career and experiences with my teammates and contribute to the team with my performance."
Am spoke of his desire to return to Japan and believes that the attacking style of Glenn Delaney's Dynaboars - for whom South Africa ace Kurt-Lee Arendse starred last season - suits his own game.
“I love Japan, its people and culture, and I wanted to experience it again.
“As a back, I like the development rugby that involves moving the ball around, and I think it suits my style. I wanted to join a team that moves the ball around, so I'm happy that my wish has come true."

The former Sharks standout is hungry to continue improving in order to prolong his career.
"I believe any player can grow. I believe that anyone, regardless of their career, can improve every day. I am in a new environment, with a new head coach, and with a different style of rugby, so there are things I can learn. Rugby is a sport that is constantly evolving. If I don't keep learning, I'll be left behind, so I want to learn here.”
