No Olympics sevens without Hong Kong - Waisale Serevi

World Rugby Hall of Famer Waisale Serevi has hailed the Hong Kong Sevens showpiece after arriving to witness the annual spectacle where he first made a name for himself in 1989.

Fiji’s all-time great was named player of the tournament in his first appearance in 1989 and won the Hong Kong Sevens on seven occasions as a player during his illustrious career.

Serevi said: “I’m grateful to be back again where my dreams were fulfilled.

“Without the Hong Kong Sevens, there’s no HSBC World Series and without the Hong Kong Sevens, then sevens would not be in the Olympics. This is where it all started.”

Serevi, whose son Waisale Serevi Junior plays for Nihon University Rugby Club in Tokyo, has been joined by a host of fellow luminaries of the game in Hong Kong.

The all-action three-day sevens rugby event kicks off on Friday as the iconic Hong Kong Stadium hosts the sixth and penultimate round of HSBC Sevens, also known as SVNS.

Australia's most-capped men’s Test player Michael Hooper is set to make his sevens debut but French megastar Antoine Dupont, who helped his side to beat Great Britain in the men's final of the Los Angeles Sevens in March, does not feature as he will be on Investec Champions Cup duty for Toulouse on Sunday.

Fans in Japan can watch all the action live and free on Rugby Pass TV. Click here for more details.
