Japan’s World Cup star Amato Fakatava has backed former Black Rams Tokyo teammate Harry Mallinder in his bid to cross over to the NFL.
Sale-born Mallinder, 27, was part of the Rams’ squad for the inaugural League One season and left a firm impression on lock Fakatava who scored three tries in four games at his first World Cup.
The former England youth starlet, who is the son of former England international ex-Northampton Saints head coach Jim Mallinder, was named in a 16-strong list of athletes on the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program on Thursday alongside Welsh wing Louis Rees-Zammit.
Reacting to the news, Fakatava told RugbyJP.com: “I’m happy for him, it’s an awesome opportunity.
“I hope he looks forward to it and really enjoys it,” he added.
Fakatava believes Mallinder’s attitude and natural ability stands him in good stead to make the switch from rugby union to the gridiron.
“Harry is easy going and relaxed which helps to make him a great kicker.
“NFL franchises will want him because he has a good boot.”
Utility back Mallinder was in America as recently as last week to hone his kicking at the New England Patriots’ training facility.
Fakatava offered words of encouragement to Mallinder who he would love to see play in-person in the NFL next year.
“I really wish Harry good luck on his next chapter coming up and when he’s playing I hope he can give me a ticket to come and watch him,” Fakatava told RugbyJP.com.
