Big-spending division one play-off contenders Toyota Verblitz have received a major boost after superstar fly-half Beauden Barrett announced that he should be fit to return from injury in several weeks.
Two-time World Player of the Year Barrett, 32, picked up a knee injury only 16 minutes into the club’s loss to Richie Mo'unga’s unbeaten Toshiba Brave Lupus last time out on 27 January.
Toyota, who finished sixth last season, brought in marquee signings Barrett and Aaron Smith post-World Cup but have underperformed this season.
Barrett, who has 32 points to his name this season (which places him 10th in the top scorer charts), said: “I’ll be on the sideline for several weeks unfortunately after injuring my knee but will be working hard to get back soon.”
The Aichi-based side have won three games and lost three this season but now have a three-week break as the first Cross Border series has brought a halt to League One action.
Toyota’s next assignment is a home fixture against the hapless basement club Mie Honda Heat on 17 February.
There’s no need to rush Barrett, who will return to the Blues in 2025, back to play the winless Heat who have conceded a staggering 361 points in six games.
Toyota then face a run of three games that will make or break their season and will need Barrett back to full fitness.
Ben Herring’s side travel to Ardie Savea’s Kobe Steelers on 3 March before facing reigning champions Kubota Spears in Osaka six days later.
Toyota host in-form Suntory Sungoliath, who will be able to call on Springboks ace Cheslin Kolbe and All Blacks captain Sam Cane again, on 16 March.
