Ex-Toshiba wing Cooper Vuna retires

Former Toshiba Brave Lupus winger Cooper Vuna has announced his retirement at the age of 36.

Auckland-born Vuna started his career in rugby league with New Zealand Warriors in 2004 and moved to Newcastle Knights in 2007.

The former Tonga rugby league international switches codes to play union for Super Rugby’s Melbourne Rebels in 2011 and made his Wallabies Test debut in 2012.

Vuna (below - playing against Suntory Sungoliath) left the Rebels in 2013 to join Top League outfit Toshiba Brave Lupus and they graced the All Japan Rugby Football Championship final (now known as the League One play-off final) in 2014 losing to Panasonic Wild Knights.

The dual-code star left Japan for England in 2015 and enjoyed stints with Worcester Warriors, Bath and the Newcastle Falcons before seeing out his career at French side CO Le Puy Rugby.

After being named as vice-captain of Tonga’s sevens team for an Olympic Games qualifying tournament in 2016, the well-travelled back went on to follow in his father John Vuna’s footsteps in playing the 15-man game for Tonga.

“After 19 years, I announce my retirement from the sport that has been a huge part of my life since 2004,” said Vuna who memorably scored four tries for the Knights against Brisbane Broncos in 2010. “I am grateful to every single person who has contributed to my journey. From all the Parents, agents and coaches that have played a huge part in giving me the opportunity to play the two codes. “Though this chapter may be closing, the memories and lessons learned will forever remain cherished. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this incredible journey.”

A host of luminaries of the game played tribute to the career of their popular former teammate.

Vuna’s former Wallabies colleague Quade Cooper said: “Awesome brother, congrats bro and all the best with the next chapter.”

Former Rebels and Australia teammate Nick Phipps said: “One of the greats. Pleasure great man.”

All Blacks great Ma’a Nonu said: “Nothing but love uso.”

Bath Rugby posted: “Legend. Congratulations and best of luck for what comes next.”
